Bonnie Presser -
RadMums Super Event Organizer

Written by: Radana Williams

If you’ve been around the RadMums site a while, you’ll for sure recognize Bonnie’s name. She’s one of the key event organizers for the group, hosting Tuesday night winter skis, shoulder season hikes and SUP parties throughout the summer. If you’re thinking of hosting an event, she’s your go-to gal for tips, outlines and support. Bonnie’s the one who always hangs back to encourage the newbies and make sure they’re feeling included in whatever event she’s hosting or participating in. Bonnie is an avid gear head and always has fantastic knowledge and advice. Her cup is always half-full and her loud, boisterous laugh means you will never lose her in the woods.

How did you find RadMums?
I was lucky enough to be one of the originals who helped found Radmums. It was a logical and exciting progression from hosting events with the Calgary Outdoor Playgroup for years when my kiddo was little. Once she was in school, I wanted to keep hanging out with the like-minded outdoor moms I had met and up our game without kids. So, it went from some casual evening gatherings to a solid group with a mission.

What does RadMums do for you?
RadMums helps keep me active and accountable for my me time and health goals. Just as RadMums was getting started I was re-diagnosed with cancer and it all came together for me that this group would be my way to stay healthy by keeping active and providing a mental break from regular family pressures. It took me awhile to get back in shape post treatment, but I could always find a group of ladies willing to go at whatever pace I was at. Now, two years later, RadMums continues to be my outlet for doing the activities I love and where I am only responsible for me. It’s a huge break from the mental load of family life, which makes all the difference sometimes. I have found that by knowing what I want to do and planning the event, others are keen to join in with me. So, we all collectively benefit and I am happy to play that part.

What are your favourite outdoor activities?
Cross country skiing, SUP, hiking and biking.

What new things are you hoping to try this year?
Stand up paddling more rivers. I’m hooked after riding the Bow for the first time, last summer. Do a 20km XC ski day. Ladies backcountry camping trip.

What do you get out of your adventures?
It’s hard to put into words, but basically, I get to feel like myself, doing things for me that make me happy because I can. I feel refreshed every time I finish a RadMums adventure – being active, being kid-free and being with other ladies who get it.

What do you hope your kids learn from your adventures?
I feel like I have been training my kid since day one to enjoy the outdoors. I want her to love it as much as I do and am not above using snack bribes to get her to push herself a little further every time we go out. So far it has worked really well. We have been out in all sorts of weather, had cries, had whines, had laughs and we always celebrate our victories and go back for more.

What would you tell a newbie who might be hesitating about joining an event?
The return far outweighs the initial bit of anxiety. I really want everyone to know that this community is for everyone, no matter your fitness level or abilities. The events that get posted are by other moms that decided to host because they wanted to get out and do a thing. If that day, time, or intensity level doesn’t work for you, reach out to us admins and we can help you set up something that does. Whatever you want to go and do, there are always a few other RadMums looking to join you. Promise.
